A New Beginning

I can’t explain the kinds of wonderful, exhilarating feelings I had when I found out I was coming to TJ’s. I knew I had worked hard to get this chance and I couldn’t wait to see my new home. When we pulled up I felt overwhelmed, but I just hoped and prayed I wouldn’t make any mistakes, that I would find a job and see my family.

The staff gave me some necessities and papers to sign. The packet of rules was a thick one but I read it thoroughly and it seemed very fair, nothing I couldn’t do. They escorted me to my new room and said, “Welcome, relax, and eat what you want.” What a great feeling I had! I felt like a new person.

I have so many great opportunities here and I am so thankful there are programs like this before we are released from prison. Foundation is the key, and this is a great stepping stone. I personally feel that everyone needs a TJ’s before they go home.

If you ask me what I need during my transition back to the community, I would say, “The kind of help I need in the community is kindness.” Kindness is the best welcome anyone could have.
